Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is a quartz movement cuckoo clock?

Quartz movement just means 'battery powered'. Unlike mechanical 1-day and 8-day clocks, a quartz movement clock doesn't need to be manually wound and instead will always work until the battery runs out (on most models it takes roughly one year for the battery to drain although this can differ depending on the model). The quartz power runs the time-keeping as well as the cuckoo bird sound/movement. On some models it also powers the movement of dancers, music, water wheel, and other animations etc. We generally recommend quartz movement cuckoo clocks for people who might forget to wind their clocks or who want a hassle free option.

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

This beautiful battery-powered musical cuckoo clock is crafted by 'Engstler', a renowned Black Forest cuckoo clockmaker in the Black Forest, Germany. This clock has a moving carousel of dancers who dance while it plays one of its 12 melodies (see details below), one for each hour, beginning when the cuckoo bird has finished chiming the number of hours.

Design

Like many cuckoo clocks from Germany, the chalet-style is based on the ‘Black Forest chalet’. These types of traditional houses were common to the Black Forest region in Germany and traditionally built of wood and stone. This makes them a favourite theme for many cuckoo clockmakers, who adorn them with wooden hand-painted decorations such as pine trees, cheerful animals, log piles, mill-wheels and other delightfully iconic ornaments and characters of the region.

The craftsmanship and attention to detail on this decorative chalet cuckoo clock is certain to impress. Perfectly suited in any room or space with natural wood features or spaces with a rustic or 'down-to-earth' decor, a cherished cuckoo clock makes for a unique and unforgettable gift for yourself or a loved one - its daily cuckoo chime is a friendly reminder of the beauty in the natural world, of clear sparkling brooks, of pine-covered mountains.

This clock features:

  • Battery-powered (typically last one year before needing a change).
  • Moving dancers who spin on the carousel while the clock plays one of its 12 melodies.
  • A moving bell-ringer.
  • A moving cuckoo bird which moves out from behind its door and chimes with a 'cuckoo' sound on the hour. Each cuckoo call is followed by a soft echo as if to mimic the sound coming from a deep forest valley.
  • The natural sound of a softly flowing river during the cuckoo call.
  • A moving pendulum that sways side-to-side with the seconds.
  • An automatic night-time shut off with a built-in light sensor which automatically switches off the sound when the lights go out. The sound can also be switched off manually with a switch.
  • 12 melodies (see below), one played for each hour after the cuckoo chime (unless the sound is switched off manually or via the light sensor).

This clock plays 12 melodies (one for each hour):

  • Cuckoo Waltz (Kuckuckwalzer)
  • Bavarian Waltz (Bayrischer Ländler)
  • Mill in the Black Forest (Mühle im Schwarzwald)
  • Wood chipper (Holzhacker)
  • The Happy Wanderer (Fröhlicher Wanderer)
  • Drink little brother Drink (Trink Brüderlein Trink)
  • There is a Hofbräuhaus in Munich (In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus)
  • For Elise (Für Elise)
  • Lorelei
  • Home Sweet Home
  • Clementine
  • Hello love (Salut d’amour)

Moving dancers

Below the cuckoo bird is a small 'balcony' on which the dancers rotate on a turning carousel. Upon the hour, while the music plays, the carousel rotates while the dancer's twirl in their place to illustrate a beautiful dance.

Battery-powered

This cuckoo clock does not need to be manually wound because it is battery powered. Upon each hour the little cuckoo bird peeps out from its door and sings in the hour with a 'cuckoo' call corresponding with the time. The dancers' carousel also rotates around and the dancers twirl in their places. This cuckoo clock also features an automatic night-time shut-off which works via a light sensor and shuts off the sound of the cuckoo chime and the music when the room is dark.

Materials

The majority of this cuckoo clock, including the outside of the clock and all of the finer details/elements of the clock, are constructed with wood (either painted or varnished). This includes a wooden dial, wooden clock hands, and wooden pendulum. However the cuckoo bird and its moving wings is made of plastic and the cuckoo door is also plastic, although it is wood-like in appearance. The clocks chains are metal, but the weights are made of moulded plastic that are painted to look like realistic cast iron weights. The dimensions listed below refer only to the clock without pendulum and weights however, as its weights are purely decorative, they do not add much extra height.

Authenticity & Warranty

All Engstler cuckoo clocks are crafted in the Black Forest region, Germany with locally sourced materials from the Black Forest. All the hand-crafted elements are made following the centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship in the region. All mechanical elements of each clock are thoroughly tested before they leave the workshop.

We have a 30-day 100% money-back guarantee on all of our cuckoo clocks and each Engstler cuckoo clock comes with a 2-year store warranty.
